President Trump lashed out at journalists during a surly and contentious news conference at the White House on Wednesday, renewing his attacks on the news media as "the enemy of the people" just moments after pledging an end to partisan politics in the wake of a grueling midterm election.

In tense exchanges on live television, Mr. Trump denounced a network correspondent as "very rude," sternly told several reporters to "sit downwardly," and at one point stepped away from his lectern, suggesting that he was prepared to cut off the session — a rare formal East Room news conference — because of queries he disliked.

Not for the first time, Mr. Trump appeared most incensed past a question from Jim Acosta of CNN, who challenged Mr. Trump's characterization of a caravan of migrants in Mexico equally an imminent "invasion."

"Honestly, I call back yous should let me run the state — y'all run CNN," Mr. Trump replied, his voice ascent. "And if you lot did information technology well, your ratings would be much amend."

When Mr. Acosta attempted a follow-up, about the special counsel's investigation into Russian federation and the Trump campaign, the president's patience — what footling was left — evaporated.

"That'southward enough, that's enough," Mr. Trump said. "Put downwards the mic."

As cameras rolled, a White House aide leaned toward Mr. Acosta and attempted to remove the microphone from his hands. Mr. Acosta held on ("Pardon me, ma'am") and declined to sit down, as Mr. Trump continued to berate him.

"CNN should be ashamed of itself, having yous working for them," the president said. "Yous are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn't be working for CNN." He added, in a reference to the White House press secretarial assistant: "The style you treat Sarah Huckabee is horrible. Y'all shouldn't treat people that way."

Jabbing a finger in the reporter'due south direction, he said, "When yous report fake news, which CNN does a lot, you lot are the enemy of the people."

The president oft clashes with reporters, peculiarly Mr. Acosta, whose confrontational style has sometimes rankled his pressroom colleagues. But Mr. Trump also enjoys the jousting of a live news conference, and he had submitted to a string of interviews in the run-up to Tuesday'south vote.

By Wednesday, though, with his party on its heels after having lost command of the Business firm, Mr. Trump seemed more than ornery than approachable.

"Sit down down!" he shouted several times every bit April Ryan, a correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, tried to ask a question nearly voter suppression. "I didn't call you. I didn't call y'all. I'll requite you voter suppression. Take a look at the CNN polls and how inaccurate they were."

As Ms. Ryan persisted, Mr. Trump kept up his scolding. "Such a hostile media, information technology's and so sad," he said, accusing Ms. Ryan of interrupting a male reporter's question. "Y'all rudely interrupted him. You rudely interrupted him."

Later, when Yamiche Alcindor of PBS asked well-nigh Mr. Trump and white nationalists, the president called her question "racist." "What y'all said is so insulting to me," he told Ms. Alcindor, who, like Ms. Ryan, is a woman of color.

"I followed up the president calling my question 'racist' with a policy question about his proposed center class tax cut because that's what journalists do," Ms. Alcindor wrote on Twitter afterwards the commutation. "We press on. We focus on the privilege of asking questions for a living. We do the piece of work."

Attacking the press commonly redounds to Mr. Trump's do good: Many of his supporters are fired upwardly by denunciations of news organizations as liberal elites. Jon Favreau, the "Pod Relieve America" host and former adjutant to President Barack Obama, lamented Wednesday'south exchanges as playing into the president's easily.

"Can we not make today into another Trump v. Media fight?" Mr. Favreau wrote on Twitter. "This is exactly what he wants."

The president'southward "enemy of the people" language has been blamed for the rising number of threats against journalists, and press freedom groups say Mr. Trump's words have emboldened autocrats effectually the globe to crack down on reporters. CNN issued a statement on Wed standing past Mr. Acosta and calling Mr. Trump's attacks on the news media "disturbingly united nations-American."

"While President Trump has made information technology clear he does not respect a free printing, he has a sworn obligation to protect it," the network said.

Mr. Trump has expressed petty sympathy for those concerns. On Wednesday, he ended his advent by proverb, "It isn't good what the media is doing."

"I am being treated very unfairly," he said, "and I'm fighting back not for me, but for the people of this country."

At one point Peter Alexander of NBC News piped up in Mr. Acosta's defense, telling the president that he was "a hard-working, diligent reporter" who "busts his butt."

Mr. Trump shot Mr. Alexander a look. "I'm not a big fan of yours, either, to be honest," the president said.

Even in a tense room filled with journalists, the line earned some laughs.
